Using Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT,

To Reduce Self-Limiting Beliefs

If you're familiar with Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT, but don't quite know what a Borrowing Benefits Group is, this article will fully explain it to you. In fact, a Borrowing Benefits EFT group is one of the most effective forms of group therapy in use today because while only one person is worked on at a time, every other member of the group also gets the same or similar benefits at the same time. While that may seem difficult to believe or understand, that is exactly what happens.

Usually, when we do a group of this nature, we sit in a circular formation of chairs so the facilitator can see everyone at the same time. Then we always start out with an introduction and everyone says their name so we get to know each other. We also point out that whatever is said in the group is "privileged" and it is never to be shared outside of the group.

We then move on with a round of EFT based upon "Resistance to Change" which is intended to eliminate the natural resistance to changing our belief system that everyone has within them. By doing a round of "Resistance to Change" we limit or eliminate it and that allows everyone in the group to change more easily in succeeding rounds of EFT.

We then start by determining what each person's "issue" is for that evening's group. If they already know their issue and how to pose the words that best describe their issue, we move on to someone else. Remember, its always best to use an issue that is emotionally charged for each person and only use 3-4 words to describe it. That way, when it comes time for them to "say their words" they can do so quickly and easily. More about that later.

If anyone cannot quite determine what their issue is or how to describe it with just a few words, the facilitator can offer various alternatives so they get exactly the words they need. They must be emotional words and not intellectual words. We never allow the use of diagnostic words since those are unemotional. The purpose of this is to make sure we are accessing emotional issues because those get the best results when using EFT. We always tell members of the group "they must feel it to heal it." Once everyone has their own personalized words we begin the actual group proceedings. We always make sure to get a SUDS for each member of the group before we start. Once we have everyone's SUDS determined we can start the process.

We always place all our attention on one person at a time and use the words they've established for themselves to start the EFT Set-up and Sequence while tapping the Karate Chop point on the side of the palm of the non-dominant hand with the first two fingers of the dominant hand.. It might sound like this:

"Even though I'm feeling sad about the loss of our family dog, I love and accept myself nonetheless." Repeat 3x.

Then move on to the meridian access points:

EB (Eyebrow) "I can't believe our dog is gone. It hurts so much."

SE (Side of Eye) "I loved that dog so much."

UE (Under Eye) "I'm afraid she's never coming back again and I miss her."

UN (Under Nose) "Say your words" (this means everyone should say their issue's words now.)

UM (Under Mouth) "I really miss that dog."

CB (Collarbone) "I feel like I want to cry every time I think of her."

UA (Under Arm) "I wish there was some way to bring her back"

TH(Top of Head) "I know there's no way to bring her back, but I sure wish I could. I miss her so much."

After you finish this shortcut round of EFT, you drop your hands and have everyone take a deep breath and check in with their SUDS to see how they're feeling now. You can expect that most people who have a similar issue or are working on their own issue, however, if they don't get any result, don't fret, just keep on going with the next round of EFT in the same fashion.

You should find that the particular person you're working on directly will have a reduction in their SUDS after the very first round. Others should benefit similarly. However, if you find they are not making any headway, then ask them for some additional words that may make a difference in how they emotionally access their feelings about their issue. Then do another round of EFT and see how they feel then.

The idea is for every member of the group to benefit equally. This is accomplished by having them "say their words" from time to time. By doing this, they are actually "anchoring" their issue into all the tapping you've been doing with the primary person you're working on at the time. Once this anchoring is done the first time, the mind is then conditioned to realize that all of the tapping is benefiting that person's issue.

As you finish the first person who you were specifically working on (by bringing their SUDS down to a zero), move on to the next person who has a high SUDS and start fresh on their issue. If they have their issue already declining, that's a good indicator that they have the right issue and the right words, so continue on with them. However, if the new person isn't getting any movement in their SUDS whatsoever, then its time to review their issue and the words being used to access them. Make whatever changes you feel are appropriate and do EFT on them until they are down to a zero as well.

Remember to say "Say your words" from time to time and change the meridian access point you say it on so you vary the point at which they say their words. That way, if their issue will respond better to one point over another, by changing the point where they say their words, it will access it then,

By the time the group time is up (usually two hours is sufficient for a group of 10-12 people) everyone in the group should be quiet and still within and be feeling light and almost as if they are floating. This is a good indication that the group has been successful. If anyone is still charged up over their issue, work on them directly until they start to get some movement in their issue.
